Barcelona

Barcelona is filled with Gothic masterpieces like this building.

That particular Saturday was a big event in Barcelona, like there was a big festival. The streets were filled with performers - break dancers, drum corps, comedy/musical stints. Barcelona has dozens of plazas and the performers just pick their spots to do their thing. Some venues were formally arranged, too; there were stages reserved for folk dances band concerts.

Thousands of people were walking around, shopping, dining, drinling. At 9 pm, buses of people - many teens - were just beginning to arrive. The Ramblas, which is a huge and long market place, was crowded the entire day.

In the evening, three fireworks shows were held at the port area, which is a stone's throw from downtown.

It was a mistake to look for a hotel room there on a Saturday afternoon. By 4 pm, the only places free were $380 hotel suites.

At the front steps of the mammoth Barcelona Cathedral, a band was preparing for a concert.
This entirely red man was posed at the Ramblas, pretending to be a statue. This is Kristee; she's not pretending to be a statue.
