A rainy day did not stop us from
exploring the city of Lyons, which is just one hour west of
Annecy. Going further west, we drove up 4,800 feet to the top of Puy
De Dome for a view of 112 extinct volcanoes.
Lyons
This large city at the meeting point of
the Rhone and Saone rivers is a commercial district with a rich
history, dating back to the Roman occupation.
Because of rain, we limited our
exploration to a small part of the town. We did get a chance to go
climb up Fourvier Hill to see the magnificent basilica.

Puy De Dome
This is the highest among the series of
peaks in the volcanic landscape just west of Clermont-Ferrand.
At the peak of Puy De Dome lies ancient ruins of a temple that the
Romans built to honor Mercury.
The summit allows a panoramic view of
112 extinct volcanoes that comprise the region. This photo was taken
where hang gliders usually take off.
