European Pilgrimage
[ START HERE ]        Back ] Home ] Next ]

In May 2005, we took another trip to Europe but, this time, as part of a pilgrimage organized by our parish priest, Fr. Joe Fenech.  We also had the opportunity to take with us Kristee's 92-year-old mom ("Mamang'). It was an amazing experience.

We explored Budapest on a boat on the Danube River, rode the bus on the narrow roads along Croatia's beautiful coastline.

We crossed the Adriatic Sea overnight on a ferry boat and climbed the Virgin Mother's apparition site in Medugorje in Bosnia. We walked cobbled paths to visit churches and other sites in Rome, Vienna, Assisi, and Bratislava, with Mamang on a wheelchair. sometimes amidst brisk showers.

BUDAPEST: We flew from Toronto to Vienna, then took another plane to Budapest in Hungary, where we stayed for three days.

BRATISLAVA: We crossed the border to Slovakia by bus and stayed at Bratislava, the capital, for two days.

CROATIAN COAST DRIVE TO MEDJUGORJE:

We started early in the morning. Our bus took us back across the Austrian border to the Vienna airport, where we boarded a plane that flew us to  Split n Croatia.

As soon as we landed, another bus picked us at the airport and gave us a coastal tour of Croatia. We crossed the Bosnian border late in the afternoon and we reached Medjugorje by dusk. We spent two days in Medjugorje.

SPLIT FERRY THEN ASSISI: The bus picked us up from Medugorje after lunch and took us back to Split. We were an hour early for the boat ride so we used that time to take a quick visit of the walled city. Then, off to the Marko Polo, where we had dinner then slept in the tiny cabins. Just after sunrise, the boat docked at Ancona in Italy, where another bus was waiting. Instead of going directly to Rome, we requested a detour to Assisi for a short two-hour visit.

ROME: We arrived late afternoon in Rome, where we spent the next two days, sometimes in the rain.

VIENNA: We flew from Rome to Vienna for the last leg of our trip, where we spent our final two days before flying back to Toronto.

MEET THE PILGRIMS: We prayed, we laughed, we rushed, we ate a lot, and we savored the moment. But, most important of all, we celebrated God's gifts. We were indeed pilgrims.
