We crossed the border to Austria (we did that several times this trip) for an afternoon stroll at Salzburg and good night sleep at Hallstatt.

Salzburg

The hills are alive . . . We've heard of Salzburg only by way of Maria Von Trappe (a.k.a. Julie Andrews) in the Sound of Music.

There are several ways to get to the castle on top of the hill at the old town. We chose to take the cable car and walk down. (Tip: even if you walk up, you still pay to enter, so go take the cable car!)

Hallstatt

It took us nearly two hours to get from Salzburg to Hallstatt. (Our GPS could not find Hallstatt.) Well, it was worth it.

In stark contrast to other cities we've just been to since Cannes, Hallstatt is a beautiful and extremely serene place, perfect for good beer, good sausage, and a good night's sleep.

We arrived at dusk, just as houses were turning their lights on.

The following early morning, we explored the town further just before breakfast. We had to climb quite a few steps; many of the houses are stacked against each other on the hillside.

This is the viewporch of our room at the guest house of Hilde Cijan.

The lake was pretty empty but one fishing boat was already out, quietly floating near the docks.
