It's mid-October 2004 when we had an opportunity to visit Banff, the world-famous ski town in Alberta.

We arrived on the day of the first snowfall of the year. There's something to be said about white stuff in the mountains: glimpses of color stand out in contrast to the greyish-blue background.

The majestic Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, where we stayed, stands  atop a cliff. Deer and other wildlife are easy to spot around town.

The route towards Calgary is  a continuous panorama of snow-capped rocky mountains and lakes.

Lake Louise, 45 minutes away, was hidden in a cloud cover. Driving up the mountains amidst fog , we could barely see the moon peak out of the grey skies.

A few minutes of sunshine offered a fantastic view of the mountains around Banff

Banff is a busy shopping district. Even so, birds sit atop your car as if waiting to be greeted.

The clear waters of the Bow Rive reflect the surrounding landscape.

Hot spring water flows along 'The Cave and Basin', a historic site near the river.
